Mayoral Welcomes prove popular

Thanks to the way school years work the northern hemisphere, in July 2018 a new cohort of international students arrived in Taranaki. It’s become a tradition in the region for the local mayors to welcome new international students. This year we had two welcomes; one in Stratford and one in New Plymouth. About 100 students attended.

Stratford mayor Neil Volzke talked about his long association with host school St Mary’s Diocesan School, acknowledged the diversity that international students bring to the district and pointed out some of the must-see attractions of the Stratford area. The group all received a gift bag with information about Stratford’s attractions. The students responded by talking about their hometowns and the Mayor could do if he came to visit.

In New Plymouth, the welcome included a great question and answer session, where the students quizzed Mayor Neil Holdom about what being mayor of New Plymouth was like and the group was advised to visit the regions, parks, beaches and Mt Taranaki. The Mayor generously let the students try on the Mayor chains and pose for selfies.

Study Taranaki would like to thank both councils for extending such a warm welcome to the students, it is experiences like these that help to make settling into a new country a lot easier.
